The airfield, originally RAF Castle Donnington was decommissioned after the Second World War in 1946. Local government then purchased the site in 1964 and the airfield was re-opened as East Midlands Airport to reflect the area that it served, with the first commercial passengers taking to the air in 1965.

Situated in Leicestershire close to Castle Donnington it is owned exclusively by MAG (Manchester Airports Group) the largest British-owned airport operator.

In 2015 it was the 11^th busiest airport in the UK by passenger traffic, with 4.5 million passengers. A popular airport for travellers from the heart of England, it is an established hub for low-cost operators such as Jet2.com, Ryanair and Flybe as well as tour operators Thomson Airways and Thomas Cook Airlines.
