Exeter Airport Information
Exeter Airport, formerly Exeter International Airport, is a small regional airport in East Devon, 4 miles east of the city of Exeter. In 2016 it handled over 840,000 passengers offering both scheduled and holiday charter flights within the U.K. and Europe.
Opening in 1937 it had a "tented" terminal before the permanent buildings were completed and Jersey Airways ran a summer service of eight flights per week from Jersey in de Havilland DH.84 Dragons. During World War II, RAF Exeter was an important Fighter Command airfield during the Battle of Britain and was used by the US Army Air Forces dropping near the Normandy Beachhead. When the RAF left the site in 1946, the station was made available for civil use.
Scheduled flights to the Channel Islands started in 1952 and charter flights followed. The airport improved over the years, establishing Exeter as an important airport in the West Country.
