Heathrow Airport, The UK's largest and busiest airport is the third busiest in the world by international passenger traffic and sixth by total passenger traffic with 75.7 million passengers in 2016.

In 1929, Heathrow Airport, was a small airfield called Great West Aerodrome, on land south-east of the hamlet of Heathrow from which the airport takes it's name. It opened as London Airport in 1946 and was later renamed Heathrow Airport in 1966.

With the closure of terminal 1 in 2015, there are now four operating terminals, numbered 2-5. Over 80 airlines fly from Heathrow to 185 destinations in 84 countries.

How to Get to Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport is situated 15 miles (23km) west of central London and easily accessible from the M4 and M25 motorways. Terminals 2 & 3 are close together at the centre of the airport site off the M4, and off the M25 Terminal 4 lies in the southern part of the airport site whilst Terminal 5 is on the Western Perimeter Road.

Free, convenient transfers are available between Heathrow's terminals. Terminals 2 and 3 are a short walk from each other and Terminals 4 and 5 are served by free trains and buses. Average journey times include waiting time.

Between Terminals 2 and 3 use the pedestrian underpass, the route is signposted and takes around 10 minutes.

Four shuttle trains run every hour between Terminals 2 & 3 and Terminal 4, average journey time is 20 minutes

Heathrow Express run every 15 minutes between Terminals 2 & 3 and Terminal 5, average journey time is 20 minutes

Between terminals 4 and 5 you can use bus number 482 or 490, average journey time is 20 minutes

On-Airport Parking at Heathrow Airport

There are several on-airport parking options to choose from and these are all run by the airport.

Long Stay Parking at Heathrow Airport

There are three Long Stay and three business Car Parks, servicing all terminals where you need to use a transfer bus. There is also the Pod parking at T5 where you get the futuristic driverless Pod that takes you into the airport in just 4-6 minutes.

Short Stay Parking Heathrow Airport

Each terminal has a short stay Multi-storey car park next to the terminal. Just walk from here into the terminal.

Off-Airport Parking near Heathrow Airport

For budget conscious travellers, there are off-airport park and ride car parks. Purple Parking transfers to all four terminals from its modern multi-storey car park on the main A4 Bath road and there is the popular, Reeds Service Park close to T4 and T5 whilst the NCP Flightpath car park serves T2 and T3. These options offer a free shuttle service to and from the airport and transfers take around 10 minutes on average.

Meet and Greet at Heathrow Airport

For the ultimate convenience, there are several car parks that offer a Meet and Greet service. Here you are met either outside the terminal, or in the adjacent multi-storey short stay car park. Some of the companies that offer this service include ACE Meet and Greet, Edward Lloyd Meet and Greet and Business Meet and Greet.

Hotels with parking at Heathrow Airport

Heathrow has abundant hotels and many offer a package that includes parking for the duration of your trip.

Popular hotels close to Terminals 2 and 3 include the Crowne Plaza Hotel, the Sheraton Skyline Hotel and the Park Inn by Radisson Hotel. There is a Hilton Hotel attached to Terminal 4 and from the Thistle Hotel you can use the exciting POD shuttle straight into Terminal 5.

Heathrow Airport Departure Lounge

There are plenty of restaurants to dine at and cafes to enjoy a coffee and a snack as well as bars that serve food too.

Well known chefs are a feature here with eateries such as Heston's the Perfectionists Cafe and The Gorgeous Kitchen at T2, popular Retro Pilots Bar and Kitchen from Rhubarb at T3 and T5 as well as Gordon Ramseys Plane Food at T5.

If you like shopping, Heathrow has some prestige shops to browse in. To name just a few, Terminal 2 has Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Bvlgari, Gucci and Smythson. Terminal 3 has Cartier, Chanel, Hermes and Missoni and Tiffany, Terminal 4 has Longchamp, Mulberry, Rolex, Valentino and Versace, with Terminal 5 boasting many more including Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chloe, Dior, St Laurent, Stella McCartney and Tods.

Just want to top up the holiday wardrobe, don't worry there are also some of the high street brands you might expect like Ted Baker, Cath Kidston, Sunglass Hut, Boots and WH Smith as well as World Duty Free.

There's free Wi-Fi available throughout the terminals for the duration of your stay at Heathrow.

For customers requiring assistance, the airport recommends that you inform your airline, tour operator or travel agent of your needs at the time of booking, or at least 48 hours before your travel and to try to give as much notice as possible so arrangements can be made for you. Assistance dogs are allowed in the terminal buildings, you must inform your airline that you are travelling with an assistance dog at least 48 hours in advance.

For passengers wearing hearing aids, Induction loops are found throughout the airport and payphones and credit card telephones are available that have been adapted for hearing.

Heathrow Airport Lounge

For a comfortable start to your journey away from the hustle and bustle, you can book an executive lounge and enjoy complimentary drinks and hot and cold snacks. The lounges can be booked for a stay of up to 3 hours, however some of the lounges can be booked for up to 6 hours for those on a lay-over and some offer beauty treatments too.

Each terminal has one or more that can be pre-booked, like Plaza Premium Lounge at T2 and T4, The No:1 Lounge at T3, also the Club Aspire at T3 with the The Aspire Lounge and Spa at T5 and the Sky Team at T4.
